The Yakiv Busel Museum of the National Liberation Struggle of the OUN and the UPA was established on 22 August 1999 in the family home of Oleksa Lykholat in the village of Byshky. The house contained the kryivka (underground hideout) of Yakiv Busel, head of the Political Training Department of the OUN Leadership. It also provided shelter for other senior leaders of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, including Roman Shukhevych. In 2019, the museum became part of the Museum of the National Liberation Struggle of the Ternopil Region.
Between 1944 and 1945, the village of Byshky hosted several important meetings of the OUN Leadership, during which key decisions concerning the activities of the OUN underground and UPA units were adopted. Vasyl Kuk, head of the General Secretariat of the Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council, wrote that Byshky could be regarded as the headquarters (place of stationing) of the OUN Leadership in 1943–1945, or, as it became popularly known, the Capital of Fighting Ukraine.
In 2019, a new modern museum was designed and is to be named after Mykola Arsenych (pseudonym “Mykhailo”), General of Counterintelligence and head of the Security Service of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.
The future institution is intended not only to commemorate the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army in Ukraine, but also to become the first museum dedicated to the structure and leadership of the OUN Security Service.
The exhibition halls and displays will present a comprehensive history of the national liberation struggle of generations of Ukrainians for their statehood throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
